Earthship 101

An Earthship is a type of home created mostly by Michael Reynolds in New Mexico to be sustainable, off-grid, and use up trash in its construction.

There are many principles of the Earthship project, but basically, you use tires to construct the main outside walls, packed earth around the tires to create a stable internal temperature that's comfortable, collect rain water and reuse the water multiple times to reduce your water consumption, solar for electricity, and an internal green house to grow food and just have a nice living environment.  It can be combined with hydro or aquaponics for food too.

Take a look at the Earthship home page to learn more.

While Chris and I fell in love with Earthships the first time we visited them in Taos, NM years ago, we're planning on making some changes in the building of our home and so can not technically/legally call it an Earthship.  It's still going to use the Earthship principles and plans but because we're going to be building this ourselves (hopefully with some support from friends and family), we need something that can go up more quickly than some of the tried and true methods will allow.  So our home will be Earthship-like.
